Job Description:

Tax Collector’s Office

Under the general supervision of the Tax Collector, provides technical and administrative assistance to the Tax Collector, performs secretarial duties and in the temporary absence of the Tax Collector, acts in his/her place.
• Plans and organizes work according to standard office procedures
• Relieves Tax Collector of office detail work
• Instructs clerical staff in correct procedures
• Provides technical assistance in performing and completing the activities and statutory responsibilities of Tax Collection’s office
• Enters information via computer into automated tax collection system
• Reviews computer printouts for accuracy and corrects errors
• Provides information and assistance to attorneys, banking officials and members of the general public
• Prepares statistical and narrative reports from the original data or rough copy for submission to Town, State or Federal offices
• Maintains financial records, including collection and crediting of taxes, and receipt of revenues for Town departments
• Performs arithmetic computations requiring absolute accuracy
• Provides secretarial services to Tax Collector, including composing routine correspondence and other materials without instruction

Mobility to get from one location in the office or work place to other locations in and outside from the primary office or work place.
Ability to reach and bend, and push/pull or lift objects of more than fifty pounds.
Ability to perform manipulative skills such as writing, using a keyboard and/or calculator with accuracy.
Ability to see and read objects closely as in reading/proof reading narrative or financial reports. Ability to read information charts and/or diagrams from a computer monitor.
Ability to hear normal sounds with background noise as in hearing using a telephone. Ability to distinguish verbal communication and communicate through speech.
Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
Ability to maintain files, records, spread sheets and database, and to make mathematical calculations using a calculator.
Ability to concentrate on complicated detail and complex issues with some interruption, pressure and changing priorities for more than two hours at a time.

Thorough knowledge of standard office/clerical procedures.
Knowledge of state and local policies, laws, rules and regulations and technical requirements governing tax collection.
Knowledge of and skill in the application of accounting-clerical principles and procedures.
Ability to type.
Ability to process specialized forms, records and applications.
Ability to meet and deal with the public.
Skill in performing computational tasks with accuracy and speed.
Skill in written and oral communication.

• Associate’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Secretarial Sciences, and three years of increasingly responsible experience in customer service, bookkeeping, clerical accounting or secretarial experience, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training
• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and computer usage
