The Town of Suffield is seeking an Assistant Tax Collector. This position is responsible technical, clerical, and administrative work involving the collection of municipal taxes. Work involves responsibility for collecting money, keeping records of taxes collected, balancing and reconciling collections, and other clerical tasks. Duties include assuming responsibilities of Tax Collector in his or her absence and performing miscellaneous clerical duties, related to the revenue collection functions. This position also has the responsibility for making difficult clerical decision, bookkeeping, and collection practices and principles, and data entry and public contact. Serves the residents of Suffield in customer-oriented manner that helps promote a positive, professional image for the Town government.

Supervision Received:
Works under the general direction of the Tax Collector.

Supervision Exercised:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Perform technical, clerical and administrative tasks involving the collection and recording of municipal taxes;
2. Collects, prepares, and enters all taxes trash and sewer use, and assessment information into automated revenue system by remote computer terminal.
3. Assumes responsibilities of Tax Collector, as assigned, or in his or her absence.
4. Receive tax payments and record payments received.
5. Remove delinquent taxpayers from DMV’s database
6. Helps prepare deposits revenues collected as assigned.
7. Inputs data entries; is able to research entries.
8. Maintain positive working relationships with school officials, community groups, and the public regarding program offerings and coordination of services; promptly and cordially respond to citizen inquiries, feedback, and complaints about services and facilities.
9. Attend seminars and conferences to remain current on developments in relevant fields.

Other Job Functions:
1. Perform other related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience:
1. A high school diploma or the equivalent and specialized accounting training.
2. Three (3) years of responsible collection or bookkeeping experience, including substantial public contact.
3. Suitable experience may be substituted for education attainment if deemed appropriate by the First Selectman.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of tax collection principles and practices.
2. Knowledge of tax collection laws, regulations and ordinances.
3. Knowledge of the operation of standard office machines, including computer terminal and calculator.
4. Skills in business mathematics.
5. Ability to pay attention to detail.
6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates, banks, other agencies, and the general public.
7. Ability to analyze accounts
8. Ability in oral and written communications.

Special Requirements:
1. Attend and pass 1A and 1B.
2. Valid, active Motor Vehicle Operator’s license required.

This position is a collective bargaining unit member of the Town Hall Union.

This is a part time nineteen (19) hours per week position. The schedule is Monday – Thursday 8:00am – 11:30am and Friday 8:00am – 1:00pm; determined by Tax Collector and may be subject to change. Vacation time is not allowed to be taken in the month of July due to business demands. This position occasionally requires long hours beyond those scheduled hours, including monthly evening commission meetings, evening work, and weekend work as job duties demand.

Compensation and Benefits:
Town Hall Union pay grade 8 position. Compensation follows according to the Town Hall Union Contract, as amended from time to time.
